                                                    DEPARTMENT OF ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERY
This department was started as early as 1955
Department merits :
 Our orthopaedic department is the main trauma centre catering the needs of North part of Chennai and many adjacent  districts and even adjacent States. North Chennai being densely populated  has many industries that puts this department in maximum utility. Our Department is further facilitated by the  Plastic Surgery Department and Vascular Surgery Department. Even from many city hospitals patients are being referred here for difficult compound fractures. This department has produced many renowned Orthopaedic Surgeons of World Quality. We in the department have two c-arms,  one in the main theatre and  one in emergency department using which we are able to perform satisfactory emergency orthopaedic procedures.With the continued  support and guidance of our beloved DEAN Prof.S.Geethalakshmi M.D., Ph.D., the department is showing uniform progress in all aspects.

Research and Development  :

This Department has undergone commendable changes in the last one decade in academic activities and in  infrastructure. At present we have research and scientific activities going on in many fields of trauma.The department is now focussing in research work on concentrated autologous bone marrow injections for difficult cases of avascular necrosis in hip joints.
Academic Activities :
              We have regular Post Graduate and Under Graduate academic programs, Clinical  and paper presentations etc. In TNOA CON 2012 our department has become runnersup in state wide Orthopaedic quiz competition, and published  good number of paper and poster presentations.This department has conducted  an instructional and informative PG course which was attended by emiment teaching faculties from all over india and this programme is appreciated at all levels.  There is regular clinical discussions and weekly review meetings being conducted by our eminent faculties enriching the knowledge of the postgraduates.Our postgraduate   presented an interesting  paper  in AOTrauma2012mamallapuram, Tamilnadu  on hand and wrist trauma.
The department has 3 eminent professors ably supported by 6 assistant professors and has 17 postgraduates at one given point of time.

Department activities
The department is conducting  out patient clinic  in all days of the week and 24 X 7 hours fracture clinic and has 90 bedded inpatient block with two elective and two emergency operation theatres conducting about 20 major and 25 minor procedures  per week.  The Department is conducting regular theory and clinical demonstration  classes for the benefit of  undergraduates and postgraduates.
