          Department of Medicine at Stanley Medical College was started in 1956, by Prof.Dr.M.G.Prabhu on April, 1, 1956. Since then Department of Medicine was headed by various prominent personalities like Prof. K.V.Thiruvengadam, Prof.U.Mohammed, Prof.G.Ananthasubramanyam. Later  years Departmental Acadamic activities were enhanced by the able guidance of Prof.S.K.Rajan, and Prof.S.Shivakumar.  Department of Medicine has participated various activities like, national and international conferences, camps like VARUMMUN KAPPOM, various Welfare activities in and around Chennai City.

          Department of Medicine at Stanley Medical College is known for pursuance of Acadamic activities in various forums. It has unique Journal Club started in way back 1991, and successfully it continues its pursuit to encourage young MD PG’s. It conducts Physician Conference  on every Wednesday, where interesting case presentations are presented and panoramic approach and  critical reveiws and opinions are shared.
          Department of Medicine was instrumental in conducting 2002 APICON, which was held in Chennai. Prof. S.K.Rajan, Prof.K.H.Noorul Ameen, Dr.S.Chandrsekar were among the few for the success of APICON 2002. Since then Department of Medicine has spread its wings, to participate and hold various national and international events. Post graduates were participated in various conferences, they won Gold Medal for best Research Paper presentation, best case presentation in TAPICON 2011, held in kodaikanal, In 2012,TAPICON, our PG has won another goldmedal for Paper presentation. PG’s are also participated in All India PG training Programme at railway Hospital, won many laurels to the institution. Every year Post Graduates are participating in Paper / Poster presentations in APICON.

Hosted City Physician’s Association Meeting every quarterly.
          In 2004 APICON, 18 papers were presented in the conference, won IIIrd best paper. Prof.S.Shivakumar, during his tenure as Professor, has done lot of Research Activities on leptospirosis and Malaria. In particular, he has done modification of criteria for leptospirosis,  which is now Universally practiced everywhere.   More than 500 Research papers have been done under the guide ship of our Professors and same is submitted to the  university.
          In 2004, there were two papers Published in JAPI, calcium channel blockers in myasthenia gravis and egg albumin in cuso4 poisoning and these papers received appreciations in various conferences.

·        Clnicopathological correlation in APICON 2013 January.

·        Paper presentation in  RSSDI 2012, October.
          For UG’s OP classes, Ward Classes afternoon Theory Classes are conducted regularly. Symposiums conducted weekly. Integrated Classes with other Departments Participation conducted weekly. General Clinics Classes are conducted weekly.
          For PG’s class are conducted regularly by MGE, Nephrology, Neurology, Cardiology Department in addition to our Department Classes.  

          We conduct Physician Meet every Wednesday and Clinico Pathological Meeting on Tuesdays. Journal Club meetings are conducted on alternate Tuesdays. Continuing medical programmes(CME) are conducted once in a Month.
